About the Playwright

Playwright Nagle Jackson, former Artistic Director of The Milwaukee Repertory Theatre (1970-76), penned At This Evening’s Performance in the late 1970’s, several years before he became the first American invited to direct a play in the Soviet Union. He appears to have imagined well what regional theatre might have been behind the Iron Curtain.

About the Performance

Our cast of SEVEN actors and ONE multi-talented musician will whisk you away to a fictional eastern bloc country, Strevia, which has -via a military action- 'annexed' rival Dunsk. A troupe of actors, formerly known as The Players of Dunsk, desperately trying to survive as performing artists in a country with  meager culture - built on bath houses and radishes, and even less freedom, but with a corrupt and ambitious Minister of Culture with an agenda.

Director Mark Flagg notes that as a topical farce rich in delight for actors and audiences alike, At This Evening's Performance will surely brighten the darkening days of November.

Our acting cast features: Michael Stebbins, Tess Rutkowski, Scott Howland, Selena Milewski, A.J. Magoon, Roc Bauman, and Bob Zimmerman. Providing superb musical interpretation will be Linda Binder, well-known to area audiences from her years as director of the Milwaukee Mandolin Society and a free-lance violinist and mandolin player.

Director’s Note

Playwright Nagle Jackson passed away at age 88 on July 15, 2024, just a month after we of SoOP had our first read through of his fine play. We are especially happy to honor a terrific theatre artist who had strong links to Milwaukee and its ‘regional theatre’ scene. Mr. Jackson was an actor, director, teacher, writer, translator and producer of an immense body of work. This play is probably not one considered in his major ‘canon’ of works, and it has never been produced in MKE, although it had a fine run at Princeton’s McCarter Theater’s Stage II in 1983. Ironically, actor Scott Howland knew of Mr. Jackson when Scott was at nearby Rutgers. I have wanted to do this play for years because it’s such an actors’ romp, one that underscores the efforts and sacrifices actors and companies make to engage in their crafts. Given the divisions and dangers in our current political scene, the play has particularly strong relevance. In WI, a state weak in arts funding, our performers and companies know first-hand the struggles of producing art. Still, ATEP provides a way to laugh at the hardships, even as the actors have to go underground.
